Makeup Trends Ruling 2016!
When you work in the makeup artistry field, the last thing you want is to be left in the dust when it comes to the latest and greatest products and techniques. Long ago when people first started using makeup, their techniques left a lot to be desired by today’s standards but were pretty high-tech for their time. To learn more about the early days of makeup artistry, check out our article History of Makeup Artistry.
As you would expect, a few things have chance since then. Would you believe me if I told you there were actually people out there who say, “It’s just makeup.” Just makeup? Excuse me? We in the business know that there is no such thing as “just makeup”, especially after having gone through a makeup artist course. In order to look your best and be on top of your game, you have got to stay up to date with the latest trends in the makeup world…and we’ve got them for you. Read on and discover the biggest makeup trends ruling 2016!
Candy Apple Red Lipstick
Ok, so red lipstick is nothing new, but lately it has become more and more popular with makeup artists give the tremendous “wow factor” that it adds. Choose a super-bright red lipstick for day or evening. Just be sure that you apply it carefully. There is nothing worse than sloppily applied lipstick – especially in Candy Apple Red. Just to make sure you get this right, read up on the fourth rule in our article: The 7 Rules of Makeup. This rule will apply to our next trend as well.
You guessed it. This 70’s trend is definitely making a comeback and is even bolder and better than before. With all of the amazing innovations in makeup since the 70’s, we are blessed with more shades than ever to choose from. No need to settle for a simple swipe of sky blue when you can contour and shade with multiple layers of color. If you’re feeling really edgy, pair your shadow with a complimentary blue eyeliner.
If you are more of a natural-look kind of girl, you’ll be thrilled to know that bronzer is the new sun tan. Why lay out in the sun baking all day when you can simply choose a fabulous bronzer and get the same results without the risk of getting skin cancer? Choose a high-quality base that also contains a bronzer that will look natural. Be sure not to go too many shades darker than your actual skin tone. This trend will bring attention to your natural features and make you look like a superstar who’s traveled the world! The natural look is always in style.
Lash It Up
Some may think that mascara has been on the outs for a while now, but we’re here to say things are only getting better. Even students in our MUA training courses agree the lush lash is back. Makeup artists are taking lashes to a whole new level with colored mascaras and lash extensions. A favorite trend is bold colored lashes against a naturally bronzed face and nude lips, making the eyes the center of attention.
Another big trend in lip color is a darker, more in-your-face shade of stain or stick with a matte finish. This is not your traditional trend for a spring look, which is what makes it more surprising and different. Pair this lip color with a matching liner and just a touch of black eyeliner and mascara to complete the look. To make an even louder statement, forego the eye makeup all together and go solo with only lip color.
Blue is not the only eye color grabbing attention this year. Shades of pink and peach are also hot looks. Many models are choosing to wear nothing else but a bit of neutral base and powder with a subtle swipe of pink or peach eyeshadow. This look is a complete 180 compared to the boldness of the lash look and dark lips we mentioned earlier. More of a traditional spring feel, this look has been called “purse and sensual” as well as “very naked.” Makeup artists agree that this makeup trend looks fabulous on any and everyone.
