Are you a graduate or current student of Makeup.School?
I’m a graduate from Makeup.School.
What inspired you to become a makeup artist?
Makeup for me is an art, it’s a way of life. I have always liked makeup. Since the age of 14 I remember seeing makeup tutorials on YouTube and trying to replicate them. When I turned 16, I began to practice makeup on other people and I just kept doing it. At the beginning of this year I knew I was prepared enough to launch myself on a professional level.
I think the most difficult thing for me was to decide that I wanted to do makeup artistry as a career – to put my art on the face of people. It was especially important that my family understood and supported me. In my family, or rather in my country, the culture tells you that to be someone in life you have to be a doctor, a lawyer or even an engineer.
I was actually studying medicine at first and it was very difficult to make the decision to leave it for makeup artistry. I was a little afraid, but in the end it was worth it. My whole family supports me and they understand that it is what I love…that I enjoy seeing the satisfaction on each clients’ face when they look in the mirror. Makeup is simply my passion and I will do it all my life!
What made you choose Makeup.School over other online makeup artistry programs?
Makeup.School was recommended to me by a very talented colleague who studied with the program. She is a very inspiring person and projects herself admirably — I don’t regret it at all!
What do you think of the program?
I think the program is really incredible. I learned so much more than I would have taking a one-on-one course. There aren’t a lot of classes on makeup artistry in my country.
What is your favorite aspect of the program?
My favorite part of the program is when they teach how to create the right makeup shades for each eye color, and also what makeup technique is best for each eye shape. I feel the most satisfied with these tutorials so far.
How prepared do you feel you will be to begin your career as a professional makeup artist once you complete the Makeup.School program?
Before I did the makeup artistry course I thought I was prepared enough to call myself a professional makeup artist, but after I started the course, I realized that I needed to learn many things – which made me very excited! I realized that in life everything is a constant learning experience and you can never truly know everything. Humility must be maintained, but above all, the disposition to learn and be better every day.
What has been your favorite makeup job so far?
I honestly don’t have a favorite, I enjoy them all equally. I do each session with the same love to each of my clients. I try to make each of them happy, in the end them wanting to return for my artistry services.
What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
I see myself with my own family, married, with my children and enjoying my profession. I would love to own a makeup studio and can’t wait to work with all of the beautiful clients.
Besides makeup, tell us what else interests you!
Besides the makeup, I am interested in my career which is marketing. My goal is to find a way to associate my marketing career with my business as a makeup artist.
What makeup product is your absolute MUST HAVE?
I am a lover of cosmetics in general – I just wouldn’t know what to choose. BUT brushes are my must have tool!
What one piece of advice would you give to someone who was just starting Makeup.School?
To all my colleagues in Makeup.School, I would advise you to read the book and watch the videos carefully. Also, KEEP REVIEWING…that much information and all those details can be forgotten easily.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is just starting their Makeup Artistry career?
I advise you to practice a lot and do not be discouraged if you may not be as perfect as someone else. It’s normal to want to be a perfectionist but that takes a lot of practice. Remember that no one is born knowing everything but little by little you can be a star.
Erika is well on her way to living her dreams, and we are so excited to be a part of her journey!
